UNIVERSAL ORLANDO
It may not be quite on the scale of
its Disney neighbour, but Universal still boasts a formidable array
of entertainment in its Orlando resort (having developed from one
theme park back in 1991). Here's what you need to take into account.
Universal Studios Florida: the original film-themed park (from their
Hollywood original), this goes 'into the movies' in style, with
great rides and shows, plus some highly original street
entertainment and excellent play areas for the youngest members of
the family. The rides vary from the truly thrilling (roller-coaster
Revenge of the Mummy and simulator ride Back To The Future) to the
truly mild (ET Adventure), while the shows are equally imaginative
(don't miss Shrek-3D) but there is a more adventurous, edgy
approach than at Disney, and teens in particular find Universal more
to their taste. The crowds build up quickly here in high season,
hence it may take more than a day to get around.
TIME REQUIREMENT: 1-2 DAYS
Islands of Adventure: Orlando's
newest park (opened May 1999) is also the biggest hit with
thrill-ride seekers, with five out-and-out mind-bogglers among the
beautifully-themed 'Islands.' Children are certainly not forgotten,
but this is more of a teens-and-older park (although the two
elaborate play areas are brilliant for under-12s). The Amazing
Adventures of Spider-Man is their marquee attraction, a
state-of-the-art, roving-base 3-D simulator ride (as eye-catching as
it sounds), but there is plenty more in store, including two
breathtaking coasters and a brilliant Jurassic Park attraction. A
full day here is usually enough for most, but again, at peak periods
it is a busy, busy park.
TIME REQUIREMENT: 1-2 DAYS
Wet 'n Wild: not strictly part
of the resort but owned by Universal on neighbouring International
Drive, this water park is less about elaborate theming and all about
high-energy rides and slides of the thrilling persuasion. With a
good children's area, it is popular with locals and tourists, and
gets extremely crowded in summer. Good for at least half a day with
the Orlando FlexTicket, though.
